Research vs. Creative

This is hilarious… found this on Peter Shankman’s blog awhile back.

Wow. Working at an ad agency, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen that scenario play out, obviously not quite to that level of absurdity, but still pretty darn close.

The balancing act between strategy, creative, and client requests is one that will always be there. You succeed when you surround your self with an internal team that understands this balancing act, and when you spend time educating your clients on this up front rather than late in the game.

Now just for fun I thought i’d throw in one of my favorite advertising spoof videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYEf8XZKlUU

    Haha… this is great!
That is exactly how I feel every time my boss has me design anything. Make the logo bigger!

People need to remember when they hire someone (designer, mechanic, etc) that if they sit there and tell them everything to do then they aren’t getting the full value of what they are paying for. If you pay a trained mechanic to fix your car and then tell him exactly what to do you are only paying for someone to hold the wrench for you and miss out on his years of experience and expertise.

People quickly forget this when it comes to design because they may have a vision of how they want it to look they just don’t know how to work photoshop so they hire a designer and tell them what to do. They would get much more for their money if they gave their input but then let the designer do the design.

On the flip side though there a lot of designers out there who are more into making an art project than effective business communication. That is what we have loved about working with everyone at modassic. You guys really understand it and offer expertise on both sides!
