An AdWords metric, average position refers to how your ad typically ranks against other ads, and by extension, its prominence on Google’s search engine results pages. The lower the position, the better, with 1 being the highest. An average position of 1 to 8 generally ranks on the first page, 9 to 16 on the second, and so on. Average position, however, can be between two numbers. You may see that your ad has an average position of 1.7, meaning your ad is usually in position 1 or 2.
